Steffan was born equidistance between the rivers Towy and Teifi in West-Wales. As a result, it was almost inevitable that sea trout would become an engrained place in his heart and soul. Nowadays, this is certainly what Steffan is best known for, whether that be chasing them on rivers across the UK or in South America. So much so, that he has now published a book on the species; Sea Trout Tips, Tricks & Tribulations.

The Virtual Irish Fly Fair 2020 - Steffan Jones Virtual Fly Dresser Wales

Steffan enjoys chasing all manner of different species – if there’s water and fish, then that’s a sufficient combination to get him casting. He enjoys nothing more than hunting down an individual brown trout, or swinging a fly for a salmon. Having been in the fishing travel industry for some twenty years already, he has also had the opportunity to chase exotic species on the fly, such as milkfish, giant trevally, golden dorado and peacock bass, to name but a few.
Steffan offers guiding and fishing holidays in Wales through www.Fishing-Wales.com.
We’re proud to include him in our line-up for the Virtual Irish Fly Fair and to showcase a few of his patterns.

From the desk…
I am delighted to have the opportunity to present a few of my favourite patterns on this platform. It has been a strange few months, to say the least. However, what has kept many of use sane is a common love for fishing and fly tying – this should never be underestimated. It is a common language that unites and levels like no other. As such, I was really pleased to see the Irish Fly Fair team not throw in the towel, rather adapting to these unprecedented times and challenges.

When asked to feature in the line-up, I jumped at the opportunity, of course. Choosing what to feature, however, was a totally different challenge. I love pursuing all manner of fish. When at home I do become quite seasonal; fishing what’s best in any given season. I tend to start my season chasing brown trout, before slowly moving onto the sea trout, then ending on the salmon. In between I will chase carp, pike etc. on the fly with great enjoyment, but I do tend to gravitate back towards the brown trout and sea trout most often out of choice – living with prime rivers on your doorstep, it would be foolish not to!

In my line up of patterns for the Virtual Irish Fly Fair, I decided to pick a few patterns that I would never leave home without. The patterns, if truth be known, I would be content with filling a box with and carry nothing else. However, where’s the fun in that? The fatigue of carrying multiple boxes filled with a myriad of patterns is part of the enjoyment of fishing and fly tying…

Daioni
My favourite dropper pattern for sea trout, hands down. This pattern has probably produced more sea trout for me than any other.

BBS Stinger
A point fly that I would never be without. Fairly simple in construction and tying, but don’t let the simplicity deceive you – this is an immensely effective pattern.

Sunray Shadow
I love this fly so much. It brings a smile to my face like no other. The sport it can create – whether the fish are hooked or not – is amazing.

Surface Lure
If you fish for sea trout in freshwater, then you MUST have a surface lure (or three) in your box. They can produce fish when no other fly will. They are also one of the most exciting ways to catch sea trout – any fish off the surface is exciting.

Loop-Wing Emerger
For tricky fish, especially on flat water, this little pattern is a gem. You just adjust the hook size and dubbing colour to match the hatch, as it’s a fairly generic pattern.

Split Wing & Tail CDC Spinner
Creeping up on a late evening sipper in the middle of summer is special, especially on my home rivers where the fish often turn out to be sea trout. This spinner pattern is rarely refused, and if it is, then it’s usually because of my incompetence!
