George Barron - Wales

I’m delighted to be invited once again to demonstrate and support the Irish Fly Fair in Galway in November 2018.  The Show, in its very short life has very quickly established itself as the main event for Anglers in Ireland and, the venue that all discerning fly dressers from around the world want to attend to demonstrate and exhibit their craft.

My personal Angling and Fly Tying background has been shaped and deeply embedded in Irish and Celtic fishing culture - that is, fishing for, and catching wild brown trout, To do that successfully I believe it’s essential that the flies I use are highly representative in profile and life-like appearance.   I tie in the traditional, age-old Celtic style using natural fur and feather, and for many years have strongly advocated the use hen hackles in all my dressing because they are more mobile and produce a wet fly with much more ‘kick’.  At the 2016 Show, I successfully launched my book “ At the End of the line “ which has now sold over 1300 copies and undoubtedly the promotion at the Show and online coverage it received has greatly enhance its sale.

All my life I’ve tied flies to catch fish - My competitive fishing background dates back to 1986 when I first represented Wales in a Loch Style International match and ended at Lough Lein, Ireland in 2016 - this period produced 22 International caps in total, including a World Cup silver medal.    I was Chairman of the Welsh Salmon and Trout Angling Association in 2012 / 2013 - I have also been honoured by being elected President of the International Fly Fishing Association in 2013. I have been writing features on fishing and fly tying for numerous fishing magazines during the last 15 years and regularly demonstrate traditional fly tying at most of the major UK Shows and around the Fly Dresser’s Guild club circuit.

When in Galway I try and fit in a wee fly tying demo and workshop with the youngsters in Oughterard, the wild trout capital of Europe - they are the future !!
At this year’s Irish Fly Fair I will continue to dress flies from my book and some new dressings that have been successful during this season.  Galway is always the highlight of my non-fishing year - I look forward to meeting my fellow tyers once again and all the friends I have met there over the past years - come and say hello, we love the banter and the craic and any serious questions.

Best regards
